Multiple means of online provision of career planning

Career planning services" are differentiated from "career counseling" services. Career planning services include an active provision of information designed to help a client with a specific need, such as review of a resume; assistance in networking strategies; identification of occupations based on interests, skills, or prior work experience; support in the job-seeking process; and assessment by means of online inventories of interest, abilities, and/or work-related values. Although "Career Counseling" may include the provision of the above services, the use of the term implies a deeper level of involvement with the client, based on the establishment of a professional counseling relationship and the potential for dealing with career development concerns well beyond those included in career planning.

Multiple means of online provision of career planning or career counseling services currently exist, the most common of which are e-mail, newsgroups, bulletin boards, chat rooms, and websites offering a wide variety of services. Telephone or audiovisual linkages supported by the Internet exist in their infancy, and will likely grow in potential as the technology improves and the costs decline.

Fresh Graduate - with lots of knowledge but lacks of experience

Every fresh graduate at the beginning of his career job wants to feel as if he has accomplished something by the end of the day.  Fresh graduate should bear it in mind that they are just fresh graduates with lots of knowledge, but very little skill.  They probably have resume even lacks any practical experiences by which a boss can evaluate abilities and figure out how to capitalize on talents.

Often new jobholders feel that they should be given high responsibility tasks immediately just because they have a certain degree; however, they fail to realize that a degree is simply evidence that you have passed a few paper and pencil based tests.  Now the real test for you is to prove that you have more than just a degree, that you have practical skills that can benefit your employer.

Hire for attitude, and train for skill

“Hire for attitude, and train for skill” This has been the mantra in more progressive and enlightened organizations around the world;  however, few such organizations exist in Pakistan, a country where organizations are still stuck in the stone age when it comes to recruitment and selection, bound by the notion that only experience can equate with job skill.  People having experience of 10 to 15 years in a single job role unable to deliver results in their supposed areas of expertise. They are experts, however, in 101 ways of keeping an office seat warm, which do not really contribute to organizational bottom line results.

Networking with colleagues

Networking with colleagues important for career success, but is not the only criterion, other things like professionalism and delivering results are equally, if not more, important.  We can observe that in countries like Pakistan, female workers are told to give more time to their male colleagues despite of giving sufficient time already.  In such cases female workers start thinking that being a female is a disadvantage. Actually it is rather in female favor.  Being in the minority means that your team will do more understanding of you not want to take pat of predominantly “guy” outings.
In such circumstances female workers should stop worrying about spending extra after work time with the team and concentrate on being a good team player during the 10 hours.

Self awareness - Critical competency in a Career

Self awareness is critical competency for a success in a career and work place.  If you are not aware of your personal weakness then you may inadvertently be saying and doing things to people around you that can lead to poor workplace relationships.  But self awareness is one of the most difficult things to obtain, as our local saying goes, "The one, who recognizes his self, recognizes his Creator.  Thus it is important for you to know your abilities if you want to start a successful career in any field of interest.

areer guidance as a public service

Career guidance standards

In Europe, career guidance as a public service is generaaly expected to meet a number of quality assurance standards. According to these standards, European career guidance should:

* Have regular review periods in which to assess guidance resources and processes

* Be transparent and open

* Create synergy and co-operation between education, training, employment and community sectors

* Ensure consistency between local and regional services so that all citizens are treated equally, regardless of geographical location.

* Strive for continuous improvement of tools, services and products.

Career Counseling Organization

Career Counseling Organization should offer free and crystal clear professional career counseling to the students of Pakistan.  It should be very much at variance from those who vend education services for huge processing fees and provide students an admission letter to a institution of higher education or a course that do not go with their requirements.  I strongly feel that it is a ethical responsibility of an education consultant leaving aside the business side of the profession; he should provide transparent and professional guidance to students.  This would only be possible if the consultant mental picture and its objectives are in the right angle.  I fell that the students should contact only competent, expert and skilled consultants who are able to critically scrutinize and have adequate knowledge of the new developments in the particular region of interest and therefore direct the students in the correct course.  Students should discover all their options before deciding the course and college especially if their destination is United Kingdom.  The so called Times or Guardian ranking of the British Universities should not be measured as the final point of conclusion.  Understanding of ranking of British universities is very significant and can only be fully explained or translated through a professional Education Consultant.

Reaching the top of our Career

In order to reach the top of our career and professions we need to exhibit the capacity to adapt, change and grow.  This comes from taking on additional assignments and demonstrating to our colleagues the depth and breadth of our talents.  The visibility we gain is also a spur to our careers.  In many of these instances, we have the opportunity to interact with a completely different group of people and learn a new set of skills that will only help us in the long run.  The other way we damage ourselves is by expecting rewards or promotions for every little additional task we are asked to perform.  Rewards and promotions will follow as surely as night follow day.  The smart ones amongst us will actively seek out new opportunities to display our talents, proving to ourselves as much as others, that we are ready, willing and able.
